Beer is one of the most well-known, and oldest, alcoholic beverages in the world. Ranking as the third most popular drink (just after water and tea), it is brewed by fermenting various starches and cereal grains, although there are different ingredients added today. Here are some five interesting facts about this bubbly, delicious beverage.
1. The British Museum claims the oldest beer recipe is over 4,000 years old and is found on a clay tablet dating back to 3100-3000 BC in Mesopotamia. Another interesting fact is that the Egyptian pyramid workers were paid with 4L of beer per day, according to a Smithsonian magazine.
2. Glass beer bottles are often brown to prevent the beer from going bad. The hops found in beer goes bad and produces a stinking compound when exposed to light, according to a professor of brewing science Dr. Charles Bamforth at the University of California at Davis.
3. Professional tasters prefer to drink beer from a clear wine glass. Holding the stem prevents the beer from getting warm and the wide opening nicely presents the beer’s aroma.
4. You can bathe in beer! In the Czech Republic, there are various beer spas to relax in. The company Chodovar claims that the beer opens pores, softens and soothes skin with vitamins, and improves blood circulation.
5. There are 400 different types of beer. The Czech Republic drinks more beer per capita than any other country. China comes in second and is the fastest growing beer market in the world.
Cheers!
