Paul Klee (1879–1940) was a German artist of Swiss origin whose work cannot be clearly classified into any artistic style. His highly distinctive style was influenced by artistic movements such as Expressionism, Cubism and Surrealism. Klee was a master of color theory and wrote at length about it throughout his life. As varied as his paintings are, so are the techniques he used, and very often he combined them in one painting.
