Frédéric Hugo d'Alési, originally from Romania, was a 19th century French artist. He was one of the first artists to design posters for French railway companies. They were printed using a process similar to chromolithography, called simile-aquarelle ("false watercolour"), which required up to 20 different colours to render the final image, making them much more richly printed, detailed and painterly than the travel posters of the following decades. D'Alési's posters captivated many people in France and around the world, including Paul Cézanne.
